NLC to shut banks for sacking workers

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) on Wednesday threatened to shut down the six banks that recently sacked their workers, giving the affected banks two weeks ultimatum to recall the sacked workers and allow unionization.

The workers’ sack has already pitched labour in opposition to employers of labour in the country with the umbrella body of the employers, the Nigeria Employers Consultative meeting, announcing the authorities has no proper to invite the banks no longer to sack employees.

Labour on its part threatened to wooden the banks in the event that they fail to halt the mass sack of people, accusing them of no longer permitting unionization and reneging at the principles of collective bargaining.

In a letter to the control of the six banks and signed through its Deputy standard Secretary, Chris Uyot, the NLC stated labour could be forced to shut the banks and their branches national in the event that they fail to take into account the affected employees.

The affected banks are – fidelity Bank, Diamond Bank, FCMB, First bank, Ecobank and Skye Bank.

The letter to one of the affected banks control reads: “i’ve been directed to inform you that, it’s been brought to our word via our associate union, the country wide Union of Banks, coverage, and economic establishments employees (NUBIFIE) that your bank is one of these which have arbitrarily sacked a large quantity of workers these days opposite to laid down procedures and the us of a’s extant labour legal guidelines.

“also, of subject has been that those blatant retrenchments have been achieved without recourse to numerous correspondence, including letters and circulars sent to you by means of the union to retrace your steps in keeping with first-rate practices in labour family members and laws of the land.

“by means of this letter, we’re giving your financial institution 14 days ultimatum setting out from Thursday, sixteenth June, 2016 to do not forget all of the sacked people or face business movement, which can also include making sure that your financial institution and all its shops are closed for commercial enterprise national. Even as looking forward on your honouring our request, please, take delivery of our goodwill and excellent regards.”
