[News] Okonjo-Iweala reveals what Nigeria needs to overcome corruption

Former Minister of Finance and Co-coordinating Minister for the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has advised the Nigerian Government on how to go about the ongoing fight in against corruption.

Okonjo-Iweala gave the advice in Washington DC, US, at a signing occasion for the release of her book ‘Fighting Corruption is Dangerous: The Story Behind the Headlines’, held at The Politics and Prose.

The former Minister stated with the robust, independent and nicely-resourced judiciary, the country may be on its way to winning the fight towards corruption.

She stated, “We really need a sturdy judiciary, there may be clearly no question about it. With strong, independent, and properly-resourced judiciary we are on our way.

“We have some unbiased institutions to guard the judiciary, however, is it strong enough? The answer I’m positive the individuals of the judiciary themselves will tell you is ‘no’. So, that is one of the tasks that we have.

“And, like you stated, there is some urgency in building institutions in our country. If we are to successfully combat corruption.

“We need an entirely new set of moves operating together, however, especially, we need folks who are willing. If each person runs away and stays in their nice, safe nook, what happens?

“That is what the people that are corrupt need you to do by the way. They need you to stay away, they want you to resign, they need you to run off and leave them to their devices, and that what led to all of the attacks.

“They believe that if they assault, intimidate, break the recognition, the person will run away. Every single day whilst we were in authorities we awakened to drama.”
