The first Democracy Day was on May 29, 1999 when former military leader and then President-elect, Olusegun Obasanjo was sworn in as the President of Nigeria and since then Democracy Day has become an annual celebration in Nigeria.

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo disclosed that in the last two years close to one million displaced persons have returned home. 106 of the daughters from Chibok have regained their freedom, after more than two years in captivity, in addition to the thousands of other captives who have since tasted freedom.

The acting president said that Schools, hospitals and businesses are springing back to life across the Northeast, especially in Borno State, the epicentre of the crisis and people are getting a chance of rebuilding their lives.

Mr Osinbajo disclosed that the Government have been focused on bringing persons accused of corruption to justice and that the looting of public resources that took place in the past few years has to be accounted for and the culprits brought to justice.

Mr. Osinbajo admitted the government was having challenges dealing with the economic problems and promise that all this economic Downgrade will be gone so soon.

He disclosed that the vision is for a country that grows what it eats and produces what it consumes. It is for a country that no longer has to import petroleum products, whose fortunes are no longer tied to the price of a barrel of crude, but instead to the boundless talent and energy of its people, young and old, male and female as they invest in diverse areas of the economy.

The acting President revealed that we are on the right path, and will not deviate from it, even in the face of strong temptation to choose temporary gain over long-term benefit.

He stated his firm belief that we have put the most difficult phase behind us; and we are witnesses to the ever-increasing intensity of the light at the end of the tunnel and asked for continued cooperation and support, to enable the government realise their best intentions and ambitions for Nigeria.

The acting President Yemi Osinbajo asked for continuous prayers from every citizens for the restoration to full health and strength and the safe return of our President and Nation.

Congratulating all Nigerians on this year’s Democracy Day, the acting president said the nation “is on a journey of greatness, and together we shall arrive at the destination of our dream like we are hoping it would be soon.
