Tiemoue Bakayoko, who spent last season on loan at AC Milan, limped off in the last 15 minutes of the match. The Blues were limited to very few chances in 76% humidity at the Nissan Stadium in Yokahama, Japan. The Premier League outfit picked a strong team as new signing Christian Pulisic made his debut.
Chelsea goalkeeper Willy Caballero was forced to make a few saves including a volley early on. Michy Batshuayi, who was on loan at Valencia last campaign, hit a volley in the first half that went just wide. Spain winger Pedro, attempted an effort from range which nestled onto the roof of the net.
Caballero was forced to rescue the Blues again just before the break as he tipped the ball past the post. Damiao nearly broke the deadlock after the interval but headed just wide at the near post.
Then bad news for Chelsea followed as Bakayoko went down under a challenge and had to leave the field with what looked like an ankle injury. The hosts hit the crossbar with 10 minutes to go before Damiao planted a header past Caballero to steal the victory late on.
