The most expensive Premier League signing following Enzo Fernandez moved to Chelsea

Chelsea have broken the British transfer record by acquiring midfielder Enzo Fernandes from Benfica for his staggering £106.8million.

The deal remained unresolved throughout the day, with just minutes remaining before the two clubs finally agreed financially.

The 22-year-old starred in Argentina’s World Cup victory in Qatar, topping a star-studded list of the Premier League’s most expensive imports.

After Fernandez’s arrival in English football, let’s take a look at the other most expensive deals in Premier League history.

Jack Grealish – Aston Villa to Manchester City, £100 million
Grealish has been with youth club Aston since he was six years old as he leaves Villa to join his Premier League champions in August 2021. The England international got off to a slow start in Manchester as he struggled to adapt to the intense tactical demands of Pep Guardiola.

However, Grealish is starting to pick up momentum this season and will likely play a key role in City’s quest to catch Arsenal at the top of the Premier League Summit.

Romelu Lukaku – Inter Milan to Chelsea, £97.5m
Lukaku is back at Chelsea seven years after leaving West London, but the Blues have paid just under £100 million in August 2021 after scoring goals in Italian football in the past few years.

However, his second spell at Chelsea for the Belgian striker quickly soured as injury woes and declining form saw him lose his place in his first XI.

After criticizing then-manager Thomas Tuchel in a mid-season interview and saying he wanted to stay at Inter, Lukaku officially returned to San Siro after just one season at Chelsea. Paul Pogba – Juventus to Manchester United £93.25m
United completed the blockbuster signing of Pogba from Juventus in August 2016, with the Frenchman returning to the club where he first joined as an academy player in 2009.

However, Pogba failed to live up to the high expectations of his price tag and he struggled with consistency as the club became volatile on and off the pitch.

His six-year tenure at Old Trafford will end in 2022, confirming a free transfer to Juventus.

Mihailo Mudrik – Shakhtar Donetsk to Chelsea, £88.5m
The Ukraine international was at the center of a dramatic transfer story between Chelsea and Arsenal in January 2023.

Arsenal had been in the lead to sign him all month, but he was pushed into a deal at 11 hours when Chelsea transfer bosses flew to Poland and sensationally hijacked the deal. Chelsea are believed to have offered Madrik a higher salary than the Gunners, with Shakhtar Donetsk offering a more favorable payout structure.

Anthony – Ajax to Manchester United, £85m
United have signed a deal to bring the Brazilian winger to Manchester in September 2022.

Antony was reunited with manager Eric Ten Hug, who coached the 22-year-old during his days as coach of Dutch giants Ajax.

So far, Anthony’s Premier League has had a slow start to his life, but the player has plenty of time to adjust and justify his hefty price tag.
