Wole Soyinka, Nobel laureate, has fulfilled his pledge to destroy his green card over the victory of Donald Trump in the American presidential election.
Soyinka, a scholar-in-residence at new york college’s Institute of African American Affairs, had vowed to give up his everlasting US residency over Trump’s promise to get hard on immigration.
“If in the unlikely occasion he does win, the first aspect he’ll do is to say [that] all inexperienced-card holders must reapply to come again into the united states. Well, I’m not looking ahead to that,” he had stated.
“the instant they announce his victory, i wil lcut my greencard myself and begin packing up.”
After Trump became declared president-opt for, the comment began gaining traction, with many, specifically on social media, asking the scholar to match his phrases with movement.
However speaking at a conference in South Africa, the internationally-acclaimed playwright and poet said he had thrown away the greencard and returned to where he had always been
“i have already achieved it; i have disengaged (from the united states). I have executed what I said i would do,” he reportedly stated.
“I had a horror of what is to come with Trump… I threw away the (green) card, and i have relocated, and that i’m back to where i have usually been.”
