The Governors representing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have strongly advised the Federal Government, led by the All Progressives Congress (APC), to consider stepping down if it fails to effectively mobilize Nigerians and all levels of government towards sustainable solutions for the nation’s numerous challenges. They emphasized that the hardships faced by Nigerians transcend tribal, religious, or political affiliations, emphasizing the old adage that “a hungry man is an angry man.”
This advice was conveyed in a statement released over the weekend by the PDP Governors’ Forum (PDP-GF), with its Director-General, CID Maduabum, articulating the concerns in Abuja. The PDP governors emphasized that the ultimate responsibility lies with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as the nation’s Chief Executive Officer, President, Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces, and leader.
Despite their criticism of the APC-led government, the PDP governors assured their commitment to collaborative efforts with the President to address the challenging situation, which they argue has been worsened by the APC’s governance since 2015. They expressed disappointment with the criticism they received from officials of the APC-led government, highlighting the need for constructive engagement rather than blame-shifting or propaganda.
The statement underscored the importance of recognizing Nigeria’s singular economy, wherein hardships affect all citizens irrespective of their backgrounds or affiliations. While acknowledging the role of all tiers of government in addressing these challenges, the PDP-GF emphasized the disproportionate responsibility of the APC-led Federal Government in mobilizing resources and coordinating efforts for sustainable solutions. They suggested that if the government proves unable to fulfill this role, it should gracefully step aside.
Additionally, the PDP governors defended their track record, asserting that PDP-governed states have implemented effective developmental policies and programs that have positively impacted their citizens. They refuted claims that states facing issues such as non-payment of salaries and pensions are of PDP affiliation, stressing that the food crises, exacerbated by insecurity and high exchange rates, are largely federal matters.
Despite their criticisms, the PDP governors reiterated their commitment to cooperative federalism and pledged to work with President Tinubu to find lasting solutions to the nation’s challenges. They acknowledged the President’s efforts while expressing hope that they would be sufficient to navigate Nigeria out of its current difficulties.
In summary, the statement from the PDP Governors’ Forum reflects deep concerns about the state of the nation and calls for decisive action from the Federal Government. It emphasizes the need for unity, constructive engagement, and effective governance to address the pressing issues facing Nigeria.
