Memphis Depay’s departure from Barcelona for Atletico Madrid has been cited as the cause by manager of the Blaugrana, Xavi Hernandez.
Depay recently closed a contract to join Atletico Madrid after the two La Liga teams reached a €3 million, plus €1 million in additional, agreement.
The Dutchman made his Los Rojiblancos debut in their weekend 3-0 victory against Real Valladolid after signing a two and a half-year contract with Diego Simeone’s team.
Depay departed Barcelona, according to Xavi, though, because the former Lyon forward did not feel at home at Camp Nou.
Depay personally requested his approval to leave Barcelona, the Spaniard continued.
“Memphis asked to leave after he received Atletico’s proposal,” Xavi said as per reports from Marca.
“He asked me to leave, he was not comfortable, he wanted to be comfortable again.
“We all came out of the situation as winners.
“If we can strengthen ourselves, that would be great. If not, it is not urgent. We will see if we can sign someone, but we must remember Financial Fair Play rules.”
