[News] Two sentenced to death for stealing handbag, phone in Anambra

The High Court sitting at Ihiala Local Government Area of Anambra state has condemned two to death for taking a woman’s handbag, phone and other individual things at gunpoint.

The directing judge, Justice Okey Onunkwo, said there was adequate proof to convict the duo.

The suspects, Anene Maduka, Ikenna Obi and Osadebe Ezeh had on February 2, 2017, professedly stole a cell phone, a purse and N10,000 money having a place with one Miss Chinonye Ogujiuba of Eziama Uli.

The Nokia telephone was esteemed at N15,500, while the handbag was evaluated at N2,500.

Anene Maduka, accused of alternate suspects, was however released and cleared for the absence of proof.

The personality of Maduka, who was the primary respondent for the case, was made an issue in the trial and the court concurred that he was not legitimately recognized despite the fact that the casualty gave confirm that he was sitting tight for the others on his business motorcycle while the robbery kept going.

The defense counsel for the convicts, Calistus Ohanusi and Enright Okilie had contended that the weight of confirmation on criminal issues laid on the indictment whom he said did not demonstrate that their customers victimized, or partook in robbing the victim.

He additionally kept up that there was no adequate proof to convict them.

The Prosecution Counsel, Charity Madukife, presented that the burden of verification had been released by observers, including that the defense couldn’t blame the confirmation cited.

Delivering the judgment, Justice Okey Onunkwo said there was no adequate proof against the primary respondent (Maduka).

The judge said,”There was observer confirm against the convicts, as the victim had raised the alert after the robbery, prompting the capture of the offenders at Umudimogo Ihiala, after which they were handed over to the police.”

Onunkwo consequently sentenced them to death by hanging or firing squad.
